Trabuco Canyon is a community-free settlement in Orange County in the US state of California with 32,611 inhabitants (2010).

geography

Trabuco Canyon is located on the western edge of the Santa Ana Mountains , about ten kilometers northeast of Mission Viejo and 30 kilometers northeast of Newport Beach . The California State Route 241 touches the place on the northwestern edge, the Interstate 5 highway is about ten kilometers to the west. The nearest airport is John Wayne Airport, 30 kilometers to the west .

history

Espingolas ( Trabucos )

A group of soldiers led by Gaspar de Portolà explored the area in 1769. According to tradition, the soldiers rested on a plateau, where one of them lost his valuable espingole ( Spanish : Trabuco ). The place and the valley were named Trabuco Canyon to mark this mishap .

Today the area is in demand as a retirement home due to its idyllic location, but tourists also use the proximity to the highest mountain in the area, the Santiago Peak or the Modjeska Peak as a starting point for mountain tours.
