The Trados GmbH is a company in Stuttgart that the application software Trados for computer-aided translation produced and marketed since 2005 to the British SDL group belongs. The company's proprietary suite of programs (or its successor) is one of the most important programs in this application area.
history
Trados was founded in 1984 by Jochen Hummel and Iko Knyphausen as a translation agency. The name is an abbreviation for TRA nslation & DO cumentation S oftware. The company began developing translation tools in the late 1980s. The two most important utilities, the MultiTerm terminology database and the Translation Memory Translator's Workbench , were released for Windows in 1992 and 1994, respectively . In 1994, the computational linguist Matthias Heyn, who is responsible for the editor WinAlign , joined the company.
In 1997 the company experienced a big boom when Microsoft decided to use the product for in-house translation work. It was followed by Dell and other major customers, to whom Trados owes a large inventory of computer technology terminology. At the end of the 1990s, the company was the market leader in software for computer-assisted translation and at the same time the most expensive provider in this field. For example, the price of the Translator's Workbench II in 1998 was DM 4800.
In 2005 Trados was bought by the British competitor SDL , which took over “Trados” as a brand name for its software products or continues to use it in the new product name.
