history

The company was founded in 1992 by Mark Lancaster in the UK. The first overseas office was opened in France in 1996. In 1999, SDL shares were first traded on the London Stock Exchange. The company has so far taken over the following companies:

In 2000 SDL acquired ITP (short for International Translation & Publishing), in 2001 Alpnet and the machine translation divisions of Transparent Language. The takeover of Trados , a German competitor in the field of translation software, followed in 2005. Tridion, a provider of content management systems (CMS), and PASS Engineering, developer of Passolo software, were added in 2007 . In 2008 SDL bought Idiom Technologies, a global information management company.

In 2010, Fredhopper became the property of SDL, a Dutch provider of solutions for e-commerce. In the same year, SDL also acquired Xopus, a company active in the field of online XML editing, and the Californian manufacturer of the machine translation software Language Weaver. In May 2011, SDL acquired the Dutch CMS provider Calamares. In 2012, Alterian, a company specializing in campaign management and social media analytics , followed. This was followed in 2013 by bemoko, a manufacturer of mobile web solutions.
