Trallalero

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The trallalero is an a cappella singing without instruments, which is native to Genoa, Italy and is traditionally sung by dock workers. By singing about their work and love, the workers tried to distract themselves from their hard work after work.

The roots of the Trallalero go back to the Middle Ages , it had its heyday in the beginning of the 20th century .

Although port life has changed significantly in recent decades due to container shipping, the Trallalero is still looked after by a few groups in Genoa today.

A trallalero group usually consists of nine people: baritone , tenor , falsetto , a "guitar" (that is, a voice that imitates a guitar) and five bass voices.

Since the trallalero is only sung by men, the falsetto voice is the only high voice in the group. Women are (with very few exceptions) excluded from the Trallalero tradition to this day .
