Transcendental is a split - EP of Japanese post-rock band Mono and German post-metal band The Ocean . The EP was released on October 23, 2015 via Pelagic Records .

Emergence

In autumn 2015 the bands Mono and The Ocean went on a European tour together with the Icelandic metal band Sólstafir . The Ocean guitarist Robin Staps, also the owner of Pelagic Records, had the idea for a split EP, in which each band should contribute a song. Staps knew releases of this kind from his junged in the hardcore scene, where he got to know new bands through split releases. For unknown reasons, Sólstafir could not participate in this project.

The Japanese Mono contributed the song Death in Reverse , which should represent a kind of transition to the upcoming studio album. Although the song has no lyrics, it deals with a person's soul life . Guitarist Takaakira Goto is of the opinion that people are in the same place before birth and after death . The Ocean contribute the song The Quiet Observer , which is lyrically based on Gaspar Noé's film Enter the Void . The film is based on the book Bardo Thödröl , which is also known as the Tibetan Book of the Dead.

Track list

  1. Mono: Death in Reverse - 11:05
  2. The Ocean: The Quiet Observer - 12:46

reception

Anton Kustidis described Transcendental as “a convincing sound document that impressively bundles the strengths of both bands”, for which he awarded eight out of ten points. For Andreas Schiffmann from the German magazine Rock Hard , The Ocean Mono “clearly steal the show”. The Quiet Observer "reminds us once more of how well The Ocean can compose and how well Loïc Rossetti can sing", whereas Death in Reverse " seems like an offset from Mono's last double album". Schiffmann rated the EP with 7.5 out of ten points.
