Amdorf Leda Bridge

The Ledabrücke Amdorf is a road bridge near Amdorf in the district of Leer . The truss arch bridge was built in 1955/56. It replaced a ferry connection over the Leda that had existed since 1886 and is considered the narrowest car bridge in Germany.

history

After negotiations in May 1886, a private ferry connection with a rowing boat was set up at Amdorf-Stintrick in order to establish a regular connection to Amdorf and Neuburg. The operators of the ferry connection complained again and again in the following decades that the operation was not cost-covering and each time had to be subsidized in order to maintain the ferry connection. The ferry service was awarded for the last time in June 1951, but the ferry operator Anton Schöneboom resigned in April of the following year without a new operator being found.

First of all, it was decided to build a catwalk to enable the parishioners from Tammingaburg , Stintrick , Schmerige Hörn and Critzhörn , who live on the Nettelburg river side, to visit the Amdorfer church. A little later, however, the local council decided to build a bridge that, in addition to pedestrians, could also be used by ambulances, fire engines and to transport cattle. The completion of the new building, which began in 1955, was initially scheduled for March 31, 1956, but was postponed due to the severe winter during the construction period. On June 6, 1956, the bridge was opened to traffic by District President Hamann.

The building was last renovated in 2011. In the course of the work, the old wooden roadway was replaced by a grating construction and a parking bay for cyclists was created.
