concept
Based on the observation that national and international politics do not react appropriately to the challenges of climate change and the impending global maximum oil production ( peak oil ) and that the municipalities therefore have to react with initial preparatory measures to a future of increasingly scarce raw materials and fuels , Transition Towns initiate community projects. These include a. Measures to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels and to strengthen the regional and local economy. The design principles of permaculture, which are intended to enable agricultural and social systems in particular, to function as efficiently and resiliently as natural ecosystems also play an important role .
The goals of individual transition groups have continued to develop since 2006. The original side effect of neighborly exchange, community and the reduction of anonymization is one of the most important goals of many of the groups. With the worsening of the climate problem, many of the initiatives assume that the oil reserves may not be used if the climate target is to be achieved.
Initiatives
According to the company's own information, the “official” transition towns in August 2011 included over 450 municipalities and cities, especially in the industrialized western world. The greatest number of initiatives can be found in the United Kingdom of Great Britain , as this is where the movement began. With the exception of Africa, where people in many rural areas are still low in fossil fuels and largely self-sufficient, there is at least one local initiative on every continent. The transition movement has met with particular resonance in the USA, Canada and Australia.
