Tranvía del Este

The Tranvía del Este (Tram of the East) was a two-kilometer standard-gauge tram route in Puerto Madero , a district of the Argentine capital Buenos Aires .

The line opened on July 25, 2007. It ran on a single track between the Avenida Alicia Moreau de Justo and the broad-gauge, freight-only connecting line R-43 from Avenida Independencia to Avenida Córdoba and had four access points. On Avenida Belgrano there was a junction station with an island platform, which enabled operation with two train units. There were plans for a two-kilometer extension to the north to the Retiro train stations and five kilometers to the south to the Caminito pedestrian zone in the La Boca district . Other proposals included connections to the Plaza Constitución on the Roca line and Buenos Aires on the Belgrano Sur line .

All expansion plans are no longer being pursued. The line was closed on October 10, 2012. In the time before the shutdown, only one Citadis car from Madrid ran every 40 minutes. It was not until September 2016 that the last railcar was transferred to the Premetro workshop and the route was then dismantled. The vacated area was used for the construction of the Paseo del Bajo , a four-lane expressway running in a concrete trough.
