The monastery (ca.1840)

The Trappist Abbey Val-Sainte-Marie was a French monastery of the Trappists in Malans (Doubs) , Archdiocese of Besançon from 1834 to 1849 .

history

Trappist monks, who had repopulated the Bellevaux monastery in 1817 but fled to the Swiss monastery of Géronde in 1830 before the July Revolution , founded the monastery of Val-Sainte-Marie in Malans south of Besançon on their return to France in 1834 , which was elevated to an abbey in 1847 . Since the management options were insufficient for the maintenance of the 34 monks, they moved, with the support of the Bishop of Besançon, to the monastery of La Grâce-Dieu (Franche-Comté) in 1849 (and from there in 1909 to the monastery of Tamié, which still exists today ).
