Maria-Toevlucht Abbey in Klein-Zundert

The Trappist Abbey Zundert (Latin Abbatia BM de Refugio ) has been a Dutch monastery in Klein-Zundert, Province of North Brabant , diocese of Breda since 1900 .

history

The Dutch abbey Tilburg of the Trappists founded the monastery Maria-Toevlucht ("Maria Refuge") in 1900 in Zundert , the birth town of Vincent van Gogh , near the Belgian border, which was intended for the reception of French monks who at the time had to fear from to be expelled from the Third Republic , which was hostile to the monastery , but this did not happen in this case. The monastery was elevated from the priory to an abbey in 1938 . It lived for a long time from dairy farming and from arable and fruit growing, but had to adapt in 2009. The newly built brewery has been producing the Trappist beer "Zundert" since 2013 . The monastery, which at times housed up to 80 monks, is now reduced to around 20.
