Traute von Kaschnitz

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Traute von Kaschnitz - artist names : Puck and Traute Becker - (* July 12, 1918 in Scheibbs , Lower Austria as Waldraut Kaschnitz-Weinberg ; † July 14, 1996 in Zollikerberg , Switzerland ) was an Austrian painter , graphic artist and book illustrator .

Life

Kaschnitz studied from 1933 to 1938 at the Vienna School of Applied Arts . Her teachers included Albert Paris Gütersloh (1933 and 1934 study of the human form, in the general department ), Josef Hoffmann (1934 and 1935 in the workshop for enamel work ), Viktor Schufinsky (1934 and 1935 in the general department of nature studies ), Paul Krinig (1935 and 1936 in the workshop for printing processes ) and Eduard Josef Wimmer (from 1935 to 1938 in the workshop for fashion ).

From 1946 to 1949 she illustrated articles in the British Morning News , an Allied newspaper in Austria, which appeared from 1945 to 1949. From 1949, Traute von Kaschnitz also drew for the humor and satirical magazine Der Kiebitz , initially without naming her, later using her stage name Puck . The artist also worked under the name Traute Becker . Traute von Kaschnitz lived in Vienna until 1956, then moved to Switzerland and married the graphic artist Fritz Reck. In 1958 the daughter Renée was born. The couple worked together for Bally , Löw, Raichle and other clients. After the start of photography, the orders for illustrations became sparse and Traute von Kaschnitz opened an in-house boutique with antiques. Due to the divorce in 1975, the boutique was closed and a permanent additional income was sought. After her retirement she was able to concentrate fully on drawing and painting again. Traute von Kaschnitz also took part in exhibitions. This began in 1982 with a solo exhibition in the Bircher Benner private clinic, Zurich and ends shortly before her death. Two more memorial exhibitions took place after her death.

In 2004 the Basel gallery Noodelbärg dedicated an exhibition to her with watercolors, mixed media and drawings by Kaschnitz.
