The Traversay Islands ( English Traversay Islands ) are a group of islands in the sub-Antarctic South Atlantic . The three uninhabited islands of Zavodovski , Leskov and Visokoi belong to the archipelago, which lies in the north of the South Sandwich Islands .
The Traversay Islands are politically part of the British overseas territory " South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands ". The group is about 550 km away from South Georgia , the main island in the area.
The archipelago was discovered in 1819 by the Russian Antarctic expedition under Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen and named after Marquis de Traversay (1754–1831), who, since 1791 in the service of the Russian Navy and since 1811 its minister, was responsible for the official supervision of the expedition exercised.
The islands are all uninhabited - however, numerous sea birds and seals live on them .
