Jean-Baptiste Prevost de Sansac de Traversay
Jean-Baptiste Prévost de Sansac, Marquis de Traversay ( Russian Иван Иванович де Траверсе Ivan Ivanovich de Traverse * 24. July 1754 in Martinique , † May 7 jul. / 19th May 1831 greg. In St. Petersburg ) was a Russian admiral and Minister of the Navy .
Life
family
Jean-Baptiste's family comes from Poitou and received the dignity of marquis in 1788. His parents were the French lieutenant-général and governor of Saint-Domingue Jean-François Prévost de Sansac de Traversay (1725–1776) and Claire du Quesne de Longbrun.
His first marriage was in 1783 with Marie-Madeleine Riouffe († 1796), and in his second marriage in 1800 with Louise Ulrike Bruun († 1821). A total of seven children resulted from both marriages:

Career
Prévost was initially in French naval services. During the American War of Independence , he was able to distinguish himself particularly during the battle of Ouessant and as a result became a lieutenant . He also excelled in the naval battle off the Chesapeake Bay in 1782. In the years 1785 to 1786 he undertook a sea voyage to India as a ship commander , rose to major in 1786 and then to captain in the same year . From 1788 to 1790 he made a sea voyage to the Antilles . After his return in 1790 he retired to his estate . In 1790, under the influence of the development of the French Revolution , he received permission to enter Russian services .
In the spring of 1791 he took up his service as the commander of a squadron in the Baltic Sea and advanced from rear admiral in the summer of that year . From 1792 to 1794 he stayed in Switzerland and served as a link between the royalists and the Russian monarchy. In 1794 he resumed his service in the Baltic Sea and rose to Vice Admiral in 1797. He received his promotion to admiral in 1801 and was commander in chief of all ports of the Black Sea and the military governor of Sevastopol and Nikolaev from 1802 . He took an active part in the Russo-Turkish war . He turned down a generous offer from Napoleon to return to French service in 1807. From 1809 to 1811 he was executive director of the Ministry of the Navy and since 1810 a member of the State Council. From 1811 to 1828 he was Minister of the Navy.
