Treading Water is a song by the British singer-songwriter Alex Clare . It was first released on May 27, 2011 and is Clare's second single to hit the charts. The song, which can be assigned to the genres Drum & Bass and Soul , was released on Island Records , was written by Jarrad Rogers, Francis White and Alex Clare and produced by Mike Spencer.

The lyrics are about Clare singing about a woman he could have, but who is possibly more of a way to destroy yourself. He doesn't believe in getting through it with her and sings that he would just ruin the chance again. He explains to her throughout the song that he cannot change.

Music video

The official music video was first published on YouTube on June 3, 2011 on his Vevo channel, and six days later on his own.

In the video you can see Alex Clare sitting next to his girlfriend in a car that is in a parking garage. She gets out and runs away while he continues singing in the car. After the second chorus, it starts raining in the car until at the end of the video the rain has flooded the whole car and the water breaks open the doors. The video, which has over 4,500,000 total views on YouTube, was shot by Sam Pilling and produced by Pulse Films.

Charts

Although Treading Water was not nearly as commercially successful as its predecessor Too Close , the track reached number 59 in the German charts. In total, they stayed in the top 100 for 10 weeks.

criticism

Adrian Burgess from themusicalview awarded 4.5 stars out of five and said that the "bearded brilliance" would get support from James Blake's fans by bringing a genre into a new dimension with expert precision and serenity.
