Tres leches (Spanish, about "three types of milk" in German) is a traditional dessert from Colombia , Mexico , Peru , Venezuela and Spanish-speaking Central America . The cake is a sponge cake or sponge cake soaked with three different dairy products (cream, condensed milk and sweetened condensed milk) .

Several countries in Central America as well as Mexico claim the "invention" of the dessert for themselves. The American journalist Patricia Sharpe dates the creation of Tres Leches as part of a series of articles for Texas Monthly magazine to around the middle of the 20th century. One theory cited by Sharpe is that the recipe was developed by an unknown manufacturer of canned milk or hand mixers for promotional purposes. The US journalist MM Pack researched for the Austin Chronicle that a recipe for Tres Leches in Mexico was printed on Nestlé milk cans in the 1940s . She traces the dessert back to related recipes of 19th century Mexican cuisine, which contain biscuit dough (often soaked in alcohol) and which in turn go back to recipes of the European colonial powers.

variants

The dessert is called cuatro leches if dulce de leche is also used. Cinco leches are created by adding coconut milk . In Colombia, variants are made with additional flavoring ingredients such as chocolate, coffee or various fruits.
