history

The origins of Freemasonry in Aachen

The oldest registered building works in Aachen, "De l'Union et de l'Amitié", was founded in 1773 - probably by French officers. In the following year, 1774, “La Constance” was founded, which most likely emerged from the construction works founded the year before, since the motto, seal and head (Br.Truc) were identical. To which (French) obedience it could be assigned is difficult to say today, this lodge was probably subordinate to the Grand Orient de France . In September 1778, however, the “La Constance” lodge was merged into the German “Zur Resistance” lodge, which joined the Eclectic League . This German lodge soon got into trouble with the city's magistrate. During this so-called “Masonic persecution in Aachen”, lodge assemblies were forbidden in Aachen between March 1779 and July 1780, so that the seat was temporarily relocated to Vaals . The conflict was triggered in early 1779 by the papal nuncio Carlo Bellisoni in Cologne. The reason for the ban (as well as for the later re-admission) were power interests in church and politics. The ban attracted widespread attention and was fought, among others, by the Liège Prince-Bishop Franz Karl Reichsgraf von Velbrück , who in return forbade two monks from preaching against the Freemasons and even punished the monks. When King Gustav III. who had already campaigned for the Freemasons with Emperor Joseph II in the summer of 1779, again used the Freemasons on the occasion of a visit to the baths in the summer of 1780 at the Aachen magistrate, the meetings were finally permitted again. Gustav III joined the Great Lodge of Sweden as a Freemason in 1780 and became head of it.

In June 1803, at the time of the Napoleonic occupation , the Aachen Freemasonry split and the “La Concorde” lodge was founded, which in 1812 joined the Scottish philosophical rite. At the time of the Wars of Liberation , when the end of Napoleon's reign was foreseeable, the two lodges "Zur Resistance" and "La Concorde" were then (again) united in January 1814 to form the building works "Zur Konstanz und Eintracht", and in 1816 they were incorporated to the great national mother boxTo the three world balls ”.

In the following time she worked largely unnoticed by the public (Pauls).

History 1933-1945

In 1933 the Aachen lodge, like all lodges, was banned. It was still possible to sell the lodge house to the Evangelical Church before the entire property was confiscated. After the end of the Nazi dictatorship, the British military authorities granted the surviving Aachen brothers permission to run a lodge in 1947. The lodge house could be bought back by the Evangelical Church. Since that time, the lodge has been working under the old name of “To Resistance and Unity” and under the umbrella organization of the “Old Free and Accepted Masons of Germany”.

Development after 2000

A few years ago, a second lodge followed in Aachen. The TG Masaryk lodge, which was originally founded by Czech and Romanian exiles in Mannheim and was now based in Bonn, moved from Bonn to Aachen in 2009 and has been operating as "Carolus Magnus" ever since.

In 2010 the ladies' box "Diotima" was founded in Aachen.

History in the Euregio

Dutch Freemasons had already tried several times to work across borders. During the Aachen Freemasons' persecution, the Aachen Freemasons were able to move their lodge to the Netherlands without any problems. Most recently, in the first years after 2000, there were renewed efforts to establish itself in a euregional area, but the attempts failed due to bureaucratic obstacles. The working title for such a planned association was "Trias", which was later adopted as part of the name. In Belgium there have also been sporadic attempts to carry out international temple work.

Triassic Charlemagne

The lodge was founded in December 2011. It was made up of founders who came from various lodges in Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium and who saw an opportunity to work across borders. The name arose from the previous attempt “Trias” in the Netherlands and “Charlemagne” for the city of Charlemagne as a cell of European unification. Following the founding ceremony, a delegation from the new lodge was received in the “white hall” of the Aachen town hall .

Like all Masonic lodges, Trias Charlemagne unites men of different origins, nationalities and religions in a humanitarian alliance.

Light introduction

Bringing in light is called the ritual handover of light to a new lodge. With the handover of the light and the lodge patent certificate, the lodge is formally established.

On December 10th, 2011 this installation ceremony was carried out by the grand master of the German AFAM-GL in Aachen. More than 160 guests from 16 European grand lodges formed the extraordinarily large framework.

The main reason for this strong interest was the fact that people work across borders.

particularities

Contrary to other customs, the establishment of the lodge was publicly recognized. The press, also in neighboring Belgium and the Netherlands, presented the event as three special :

  • the establishment of a lodge in itself is a relatively rare occurrence
  • an international lodge as unique
  • the public perception as an opportunity for the enrichment of Aachen's cultural life (as described by the Aachen mayor at the reception of the box in the town hall).

Activities in public space

Trias Charlemagne participates in the cultural life of Aachen as far as it can. In 2012/13 various lectures and discussions were offered on the subject of “world personalities”. Like most boxes in Germany, it offers guest evenings where interested parties can get to know them. This practice is less common in the Netherlands and Belgium. Trilingual temple work with international participation has been carried out since December 2012 .
