Trifle

Trifle is an English dessert consisting of several layers of custard , fruit or jam , sponge cake and whipped cream . The biscuit is generally soaked with alcohol ( port , sweet sherry , Madeira or white wine).

The word trifle is derived from the Middle English trufle , which in turn goes back to French trufe and means something like trifle or nothing .

The different layers of a trifle

The dessert has changed over time. There was already a dessert called trifle in England at the end of the 16th century, but it essentially consisted of whipped cream and was very similar to today's fool . The oldest known recipe with this name appeared in the book The Good Huswife's Jewell in 1596 . The current form of the trifle was not created until the middle of the 18th century, made from soaked biscuit and custard and a layer of syllabub , which was later replaced by whipped cream. The first recipe of this kind was published by Hannah Glasse .

Desserts such as Tipsy cake , Whim-Wham and Zuppa inglese are closely related to Trifle .

A trifle is an essential part of a Burns Supper , which is held on January 25th of each year (the birthday of the Scottish poet Robert Burns ) in honor of him.
