Trine is an action- puzzle computer game with role-play and platforming aspects that was developed by the Finnish company Frozenbyte for Windows , PlayStation 3 and macOS . The Windows version was released on July 3, 2009. The PlayStation 3 version followed on September 17, 2009 in Europe and on October 22, 2009 in North America. Trine is also available as a download - the PC or Mac version on Steam , Direct2Drive, GamersGate, GamesLoad and Impulse, the PS3 version is offered online on the PlayStation Network . On April 12, 2011, a Linux version of Trine was released as part of the package "The Humble Frozenbyte Bundle".
Game mechanics
Similar to the 1992 classic The Lost Vikings , Trine also has three characters with fundamentally different abilities that must be used by the player to overcome obstacles and solve puzzles. Unlike the classic, however, in Trine all characters are united in one figure and you can transform the figure into one of the characters.
The thief has a bow and arrow with which she can defend herself, as well as a grappling hook that allows her to swing over larger abysses.
The wizard is able to move objects using his magic power. He is also able to create boxes and planks, which can then be used to overcome obstacles.
The knight has a shield and sword. With the sword opponents can be attacked, while with the shield the defense against danger is possible.
In the course of the game, objects can be found or skills acquired that help the player, but are not absolutely necessary to progress in the game. The knight gets a big hammer, the thief gets fire arrows or even the ability to shoot three arrows at the same time. The magician has the option of conjuring up planks or floating triangles instead of boxes. There are also rings and amulets that give the character more power or skills, such as diving indefinitely.
Reviews
The reviews of Trine were mostly positive. Among other things, the good puzzle structure and the successful combination of puzzle and combat elements were praised. There was criticism for the multiplayer mode , which falls short of its potential, as well as for the relatively unimaginative story.
In Giant Bomb, Trine was one of the three best PC games of 2009. According to Metacritic , the game was rated with an average of 80%.
