Linnaeus Tripe (born April 14, 1822 in Plymouth Dock ; died March 2, 1902 in Devonport ) was a British soldier and photographer.

Life

Linnaeus Tripe was born into a large family of a doctor. He joined the Army of the East India Company as a cadet in 1838 and was promoted to lieutenant in South India in 1840. For health reasons he returned to England between 1850 and 1854 and began to experiment with photography. In June 1854 he returned to Bangalore with the rank of captain and made his first recordings there in December of that year. In February 1855 he exhibited 68 photographs of temples for the first time in Madras . In the same year he accompanied an expedition of the East India Company to Burma , his 108 recordings were presented in the book A Series of Views in Burmah taken during Major Phayre's Mission to the Court of Ava in 1855 .

In 1857 he was employed as a government photographer in Madras and photographed not only buildings but also public figures. The British government took political control of India in 1857 and Tripe's orders were suspended in 1859 by Charles Trevelyan for cost reasons. In 1863 Tripe joined the British Army and was promoted to major in 1873. In 1869 he made two more series of photos in Burma. From 1874 he lived in retirement in Devonport.
