At the beginning of his sports career, Tafel was an alpine ski racer . Larger successes were largely absent, a second place in an FIS race was his best result. After he had competed in his last alpine ski race in December 2010, he turned to ski cross. In winter 2010/11, in his first ski cross season, Tafel mainly took part in the North American continental championship Nor-Am Cup. He was on the podium in all ten races, five of them as the winner. He made his debut in the Freestyle World Cup on February 11, 2011 in Blue Mountain , where he finished 33rd.
Tafel won his first World Cup points on December 18, 2011 with 9th place in Innichen . This was his best result for around two months, until he surprisingly won the World Cup race in Götschen on February 25, 2012 .
