The Triton Fountain in Nysa ( Neisse ) is a baroque statue on the streets Bracka ( Brüderstraße ) and Celna ( Zollstraße ), near the ring. It was created based on the Triton Fountain by Gian Lorenzo Bernini in Rome.

History and description

The Neisser Triton Fountain was built between 1700 and 1701. The fountain was made in light Silesian marble from Groß Kunzendorf by an unknown sculptor. Today it represents one of the most important works of art in the city. In form and design, it is closely based on the Roman model, but is not a direct copy.

A column with four dolphins on which a shell in the shape of a clam rises rises from the lower large water basin. On this bowl is the sculpture of the kneeling Triton with a shell in his mouth, which he blows like a trumpet and from which the water gushes. Next to the large basin is a smaller basin that takes in the water that runs out of a water outlet in the shape of a dolphin head. On the north side, between the dolphins, the coat of arms of the city of Neisse with the inscriptions SPQN and 1701 was attached. The inscription SPQN (Senatus Populusque Nissiensis, Senate and People of Neisse) reminds of the inscription SPQR (Senatus Populusque Romanus, Senate and People of Rome) popular in ancient Rome .
