Old alternative coat of arms
The old coat of arms shows John the Baptist with a fur robe on a silver background , the patron of the Breslau Cathedral and the Diocese of Breslau . In his left hand he holds an open book with a lamb resting on it, with his right hand he points to the lamb. The fur garment and the lamb are attributes of John the Baptist. There are two signs at his feet, one on the left and one on the right. Each of the two signs shows three silver lilies on a red background, which are positioned two to one. Like John the Baptist, the lilies refer to the diocese of Wroclaw: They are part of the coat of arms of the diocese of Wroclaw.
John the Baptist first appeared in a seal from Neisse in 1306.
In Helwig's Silesian map from 1561, Johann Siebmacher's coat of arms book from 1605 and other publications, a coat of arms with three silver lilies on a red background is shown. The lilies are in a two-to-one relationship.
Older coat of arms
The oldest seal of the city, at the same time the oldest known seal of a Silesian city, is on a document from the year 1230. It shows a three-tower castle with a cloverleaf arch above the gate and a crosier in the gate.
Another seal dates from 1290. This shows a wide crenellated tower with an open gate.
In 1306 another seal appeared. The 66 mm large seal shows two narrow towers connected by a pointed arch . John the Baptist appears for the first time under the arch in the seal of the city. With his right hand he blesses a kneeling bishop on his right and holds a lamb with a nimbus disc in his left hand .
