Tritordeum is a type of grain that was obtained through conventional breeding from two different types of grain. Durum wheat ( Triticum durum ) was successfully crossed with the wild barley Hordeum chilense . Tritordeum is therefore not a genetically modified organism ( GMO ). The name is a suitcase word from the Latin names of the grains Trit icum durum and H ordeum chilense .

history

Previous attempts to cross wheat with barley have always been unsuccessful. It was not until 1977 when wild barley was used that a stable new hybrid emerged. The research on this was carried out in the 1970s by a group of Spanish scientists in the province of Cordoba from the CSIC ("Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas"). Tritordeum is marketed by “Agrasys”, a spin-off from CSIC, under the registered trademark “Tritordeum®”.

property

The tritordeum ears are slimmer than durum wheat ears. Due to the barley genes, their grains are narrower and more elongated than wheat grains.

composition

Tritordeum contains less gluten than wheat, but it is not suitable for the diet of celiac disease . Since the percentage of problematic proteins is lower than that of wheat, tritordeum is a good alternative for people with gluten intolerance, as it is easy to digest.

Tritordeum contains ten times more lutein than common wheat (an antioxidant that protects the macula from harmful sun rays). Lutein is also responsible for the golden yellow color of the grain and flour.
