The Triviidae are a family of exclusively marine snails that occur almost worldwide with the exception of the Antarctic waters. They feed very specifically on sea squirts (Ascidiae).
features
The mostly small cases are twisted on the right and are convoluted to trochospiral. The adult size is only about 1.5 to 27 millimeters (usually 4 to 15 millimeters). In some species, the narrow mouth extends over the entire length (in the case of convolute winding cases). In other species, the mouth is slightly shorter than the total length. The housings are usually completely covered by two jacket lobes. If the animal is irritated, it slowly withdraws into the housing. With Trivia , the housing is covered by transverse ribs running transversely to the longitudinal axis. In other genera the casing is smooth or covered with fine pustules. The foot is comparatively small, as is the propodium. There is no operculum. The ontogenetic development takes place via a plankton-eating Veliger larva.
Way of life
Triviidae live from the tidal range to a depth of around 1,000 meters. However, the main distribution is in the shallow water area. They live with sea squirts , which they mainly feed on.
Systematics
The systematic position of the family is still discussed quite controversially. Götting (1997) assigned them to the superfamily Cypraeoidea, Millard (1997) and Ponder & Lindberg (1997) put them in their own superfamily Trivioidea, Riedel (2000) included them in the superfamily Lamellarioidea, while Bouchet & Rocroi (2005) put them into their own superfamily put in the superfamily Velutinoidea. The family Triviidae is divided into two subfamilies:
- Eratoinae Gill, 1871
-
Triviinae Troschel, 1863
- European Kauri ( Trivia monacha )
and has around 100 species in the genera Erato , Proterato , Pseudotrivia , Trivia , Triviella and Trivirostra .
