Trixie Smith

Trixie Smith (* 1895 in Atlanta , Georgia , † September 21, 1943 in New York City ) was an American blues singer.

After studying in Alabama , Trixie Smith moved to New York in 1915. She worked in minstrel shows and in the TOBA circuit. In 1922 she made her first recordings for Black Swan Records , including My Man Rocks Me With One Steady Roll , supposedly the first recording to mention the term "rock and roll". In the same year Smith won the first blues competition at the Inter-Manhattan Casino in New York with her play Trixie's Blues .

In 1923 further recordings for Black Swan followed. 1924-25 Smith made recordings with the Fletcher Henderson Orchestra for Paramount Records . She has appeared in music revues and Broadway shows. Between 1932 and 1938 she starred in four films. She had her last recordings in 1938 and 1939.

When Trixie Smith died in New York in 1943, she was largely forgotten.
