Tropheryma whipplei is a gram-positive aerobic rod bacterium from the Cellulomonadaceae family . Usually it is a commensal in the mouth area with no pathogenic symptoms. In some people, probably as a result of defective cellular immunity , the bacteria enter the upper small intestine and a multisystemic disease ( Whipple's disease ) develops .
features
Tropheryma whipplei consists of short aerobic rods that are usually 0.8 to 1.7 µm long and 0.25 to 0.3 µm wide. Flagella are not formed. They are gram-positive and stain well in the PAS reaction , but not with the Ziehl-Neelsen stain , so they are not acid-fast. The bacteria grow mainly within the host cells. When extracellular, the bacterium forms cell aggregates that are embedded in an extracellular matrix .

Genome
Several Tropheryma whipplei have been sequenced so far. The bacterium seems to have a reduced genome compared to other actinobacteria .
Surname
The species name honors the American pathologist George Hoyt Whipple . The generic name comes from the Greek: τροφή trophé - nutrition and ερυμα eryma - hurdle, obstacle, as the bacterium can cause malabsorption .
