Troy Richard Tanner (born October 31, 1963 in Hacienda Heights , California ) is a retired American volleyball and beach volleyball player and Olympic champion .

Career indoor volleyball

Tanner began playing volleyball at Pepperdine University, California . The outside attacker then played in the US national team , with which he won the gold medal at the Olympic Games in Seoul in 1988 . In the following years Tanner played for professional teams in Rome , Zagreb and Osaka .

Career beach volleyball

From 1989 to 1998 Tanner played beach volleyball successfully on the AVP Tour and the FIVB World Tour . Highlights here were third place at the FIVB Open in Enoshima in 1993 alongside Dan Vrebalovich , third and second place at the AVP Grand Slams in Hermosa Beach and in Chicago with Randy Stoklos, and fifth place at the 1997 World Championships in Los Angeles together with Ian Clark . As coach, Tanner led Kerri Walsh and Misty May-Treanor to world championship titles in 2007 and Olympic gold medal in 2008.

Private

Tanner lives in Irvine , California , where he runs a volleyball club. He is married and has two sons and a daughter.
