Trubezkoi (noble family)
Trubetskoy ( Russian Трубецкой , female Trubezkaja / Трубецкая , plural Trubezkije / Трубецкие ) is the name of a Russian-Polish royal house, a side branch of the Middle Ages in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania ruling dynasty.
history
The Trubetskoi house belongs to the Gediminas dynasty . His progenitor is Gediminas' grandson Dmitri I the Elder († 1399), who received the Duchy of Brjansk with the center Trubchevsk , then also called Trubezk, from his father, the Lithuanian Grand Duke Algirdas . His Russian Orthodox descendants ruled there until around 1530, when they were forced to choose between conversion to Catholicism or exile. They then went to Moscow to the court of Grand Duke Vasily III. In the time of turmoil Dmitri Trubetskoi († 1625) fought in the armed forces that drove the Poles from Moscow in 1612 and was then one of the candidates for the vacant throne of the Tsar, while his cousin Wigund-Jeronym Trubezkoi fought on the Polish side. He went to Poland, but his descendants returned to Moscow with Yuri Trubetskoi around 1660. All today's Trubezkois descend from his marriage to Princess Irina Galitzin .
Over the centuries, the Trubetskoi house produced numerous important generals, diplomats, philosophers and artists. A side branch of the Trubezkoi continued in Poland-Lithuania (there under the name Trubecki ). After the Russian October Revolution , most of the representatives of the House of Trubezkoi emigrated ( French Troubetzkoy , English Troubetskoy ).
