history
Takeover by Donald Trump
After Eastern Air Lines faced more and more financial problems in the late 1980s, it was decided to sell the company's routes and aircraft. In this context, the profitably operating Eastern Air Lines Shuttle was split off from the parent company in order to be able to sell this segment at a profit. On October 5, 1988, millionaire Donald Trump acquired the rights to the airline for around US $ 380 million. The establishment as Trump Shuttle took place on June 7, 1989 and it took flight operations on June 23, 1989, it became known as Trump Airlines .
Realignment
In the course of the takeover, the decision was made to adapt the business model and transform the airline into a luxury carrier. In addition to a new white and red livery, the cabin design has been upgraded with root wood and chrome.
Trump Shuttle was also one of the first airlines in the world to introduce self-service check-in counters with the help of LapStop.
However, since the airline's customers placed more emphasis on comfort than on luxurious equipment and because many customers switched to the Pan Am shuttle during a strike before Donald Trump took over the airline , Trump Shuttle quickly ran into financial problems. The sharp rise in kerosene prices as a result of the second Gulf War also ensured that the investor group who provided Donald Trump with the money for the airline took over the majority of the airline in 1990 and prepared it for sale.
Sale to US Airways Group
However, due to the subsequent economic recession after the Gulf War, the investment group was unable to sell the airline to interested parties (including Northwest Airlines and American Airlines ) at the desired price . Finally, the USAir Group was offered to sell 40% of the ownership rights, provided that flight operations would be maintained for another 10 years including all costs. Trump Airlines ceased operations on April 7, 1992 and resumed operations on April 12, 1992 under the name USAir Shuttle. On November 19, 1997, the US Airways Group (formerly USAir Group) took over the company completely. The independent subsidiary then continued its flight operations under the name US Airways Shuttle. On July 1, 2000, US Airways Shuttle was merged with US Airways. US Airways subsequently continued to use the US Airways Shuttle brand name on some routes.
