Truncus vagosympathicus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The vagosympathetic trunk is a nerve of the autonomic nervous system in many mammals . It is a connection between the vagus nerve and the sympathetic cord of the neck between the medium cervical ganglion and the cervical cranial ganglion . Occasionally in some individuals both parts run separately on the neck, as is the rule in humans .

Both parts, if united, have a common epineural sheath , but there is no functional connection between the two. The main direction of the flow of information for the vagus component is from the head to the rib cage, and vice versa for the sympathetic component. Damage to the vagosympathetic trunk leads to a failure of the sympathetic nervous system in the head area ( Horner's syndrome , vasodilation , anhidrosis ) and parasympathetic innervation in the chest and abdomen as well as laryngeal whistling .

The vagosympathetic trunk runs with the common carotid artery in a common fascia sheath (vagina carotica), which means that both conduction pathways are firmly connected. They lie dorsal (above) the trachea and esophagus .
