Trygve Magnus Haavelmo (born December 13, 1911 in Skedsmo , † July 28, 1999 in Oslo ) was a Norwegian economist . From 1948 to 1979 he was professor of social economy and statistics at the University of Oslo . In 1976 he was made a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

In 1989 he received the Alfred Nobel Memorial Prize for Economics for his formulation of the probabilistic foundations of econometrics . The Haavelmo theorem is named after his name, according to which an increase in government spending can lead to an economic upswing even if the additional expenditure is financed by tax revenues and thus private demand is restricted. The economic upturn is generated by a so-called multiplier effect.
