The Chesme Church ( Russian Чесменская церковь :, full name Church of St. John the Baptist on Tschesmensker Palais , Russian церковь Рождества Иоанна Предтечи при Чесменском Дворце is) a church building in St. Petersburg , Russia . It was built in honor of the Russian sailors. In the naval battle of Çeşme in 1770, the Russian fleet won the decisive victory in the 5th Russian Turkish War . The architect Georg Friedrich Veldten (Russian: Юрий Матвеевич Фельтен) created the idiosyncratic structure in 1780 in a neo-Gothic style with oriental motifs.

Chesmensk Military Cemetery, St. Petersburg

Next to the church is the Chesmensk military cemetery with the graves of the veterans of the campaigns Mikhail Kutuzov , Alexander Suvorov and others, as well as the defenders of Leningrad during the German-Soviet war and the Leningrad blockade .
