Tsuruya Namboku IV. ( Japanese 鶴 屋 南北 ; Katsu Hyōzō I , 勝 俵 蔵 ; Sawa Hyōzō , 沢 兵 蔵 bw. 澤 兵 藏 ; Sakurada Hyōzō , 桜 田 兵 蔵 or 櫻 田 兵 藏 ; * 1755 in Edo ; † 22 December 1829. † 22 December 1829 ibid) was a Japanese kabuki author.
Tsuruya was born the son of the dyer Ebiya Izaburō and in 1776 became a student of the kabuki author Sakurada Jisuke I. From 1777 he worked under the name Sakurada Hyōzō for the Nakamura-za theater from 1880 as Sawa Hyōzō for the Ichimura-za in 1788, he took over the death of his father-in-law Tsuruya Namboku III. the name Tsuruya Namboku IV .
With the support of the actor Bandō Hikosaburō III. he became the main author ( tatesakusha ) on the Kawarazaki-za in 1803 . He was only successful as a playwright after 1800. He then wrote more than 120 plays and was best known as the author of ghost dramas such as Sakurahime azuma no bunshō (1817) and Yotsuya kaidan (1825). His use of technical stage effects such as quick costume changes ( hayagawari ) and flying through the air ( chūnori ) were famous . The main characters in his plays included actors such as Onoe Shōroku I. , Onoe Kikugorō III. , Matsumoto Kōshirō and Ichikawa Danjūrō VII.
