This species is sometimes considered a subspecies of the Brazilian pygmy owl and then referred to as Glaucidium brasilianum pallens or Glaucidium brasilianum tucumanum .

As a separate species, this pygmy owl was separated from the Brazilian pygmy owl due to differences in genetics, size and reputation by P. Heidrich and colleagues

This segregation was not accepted by the South American Classification Committee (SACC), a committee of the American Ornithological Society .

The species occurs in South America in Argentina south of the province of Tucumán and in the northern half of the province of Cordoba , in Bolivia in the Gran Chaco region and in Paraguay .
