( Jardine , 1855)

The toucan bearded bird ( Semnornis ramphastinus ) belongs to the South American genus of the prickly beak within the order of the woodpecker birds . Currently it is still classified in the bearded family . However, recent DNA analysis has shown that the bearded family is paraphyletic. That is, the bearded birds of the New World, which include the toucan bearded bird, are more closely related to the toucans than to the bearded birds of the old world. A separate family with the name Semnornithidae was therefore proposed for the genus of the prickly beaks .

description

The body length is 22 centimeters. Males have a wing length of 9.7 to 11 centimeters, the tail measures between 7.2 and 8.3 centimeters. The beak length is 2.2 to 2.4 centimeters. Females have similar body measurements.

In the males, the top of the head and the neck are shimmering black. A black rear part of elongated feathers contrasts with a white eye stripe. The females lack the elongated feathers. The sides of the head, chest and throat are blue-gray. The top is dark brown and the rump is yellowish. The wings are dark bluish gray and brown. The underside is yellowish gray and a reddish discoloration on the chest and abdomen. The short tail is gray-blue. The beak is light yellow with a dark tip. The legs are green, the eyes red-brown. Their reputation, which the couples usually perform in a duet, is antiphonic (alternating song).

Occurrence and habitat

There are two subspecies of the toucan bearded bird. Semnornis ramphastinus ramphastinus occurs in southwestern Colombia (Valle del Cauca, Cauca and Nariño). Semnornis ramphastinus caucae is native to northwest Ecuador . Its habitat are mountain cloud forests at an altitude of 1000 to 1400 m in the high-precipitation Chocó region at the western foot of the Andes.

Lifestyle and diet

Toucan bearded birds feed exclusively on fruits. They are faithful to their location and defend their territory all year round. The brood care of the toucan bearded birds is interesting. They breed in groups. Not only do the parents take care of the incubation of the eggs and the rearing of the young, but also the offspring from previous broods. The nests and sleeping places are in tree hollows. The breeding season lasts 15 days and the young are fledged after 45 days.
