The Tullibody Old Bridge is a former road bridge over the Devonian near the Scottish town of Tullibody in the Clackmannanshire Council Area . In 1960 the building was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest category A. The bridge was also protected as a Scheduled Monument between 1933 and 2016 .

history

The exact construction period is not recorded. The actual bridge over the Devonian, which forms the eastern part of the structure, dates from the 16th century and was built before 1555. The western driveway was completed before 1616. It is possible that the bridge was built on behalf of Robert Sibbald , court tailor of the Scottish King James IV . However, this is by no means guaranteed. In 1560 the structure was destroyed and rebuilt. During the 17th century alone, the Tullibody Old Bridge had to be repaired three times. In 1697, the stonemason Thomas Bauchop was commissioned with the renewal of the eastern arch. After a steel bridge was built directly north over the Devon to replace it, the Tullibody Old Bridge was decommissioned in 1920. Today the A907 runs again a few meters north over a modern bridge. The Tullibody Old Bridge is now only open to non-motorized traffic.

description

The bridge crosses the Devon about two kilometers before its confluence with the Forth. It is located a few hundred meters west of Tullibody, just south of the border between Clackmannanshire and Stirling . The quarry stone structure crosses the Devon with two segmental arches. To avoid flood damage, three more arches can be found along the long driveway to the west. The carriageway is around 3.5 m wide and is delimited by stone parapets. The entire structure is around six meters wide.
