job

The non-profit organization was founded in 1979 at the Aachen University Hospital and was an amalgamation of all 20 hospitals in the metropolitan region in order to ensure cancer care for one million people, and it did pioneering work in the area of breast cancer in particular . Among other things, the Aachen Tumor Center used a so-called Mammobil for the first time in Germany in 1999 to improve the early detection of breast cancer with the help of mobile mammography , since tumors in Germany were discovered at a later stage than in neighboring countries, which resulted in many worsened disease courses and deaths that would have been avoidable by earlier detection.

The Tumor Center Aachen has been jointly supported by the Aachen University Hospital and its affiliated teaching hospitals Marienhospital Aachen and Luisenhospital Aachen (and since 2017 supplemented by the Rhein-Maas Klinikum and the Aachen City Region ). It is funded by the non-profit support group Tumorzentrum Aachen e. V. and advises those affected and their relatives about possible therapies and aftercare and works on an interdisciplinary and supraregional level with specialists, hospitals and therapy facilities. In addition, it reviews treatment methods, uses campaigns to provide information about cancer and tumor prevention, and publishes current scientific findings on the latest therapies, and maintains a cancer registry with statistical data on all patients in the area.

The Tumor Center Aachen is organized in the " Center for Integrated Oncology (CIO) Aachen Bonn Cologne Düsseldorf" of the "Network Oncological Top Centers" of the German Cancer Aid . It is a member of the " Working Group of German Tumor Centers ." In addition, the Tumor Center Aachen cooperates with the Epidemiological Cancer Register of North Rhine-Westphalia as well as with the Belgian and Dutch cancer registers and with the European certification body for cancer centers, as well as with the Institute for Medical Informatics at the University of Giessen , with the "European Society for Breast Studies" (EUSOMA), with the "European Reference Organization for the Quality Assurance of Mammography Screening" (EUREF) and with the "Collaborating Center for the Epidemiology and Prevention of Cardiovascular and Other Chronic Diseases" of the World Health Organization .
