Center for Integrated Oncology

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Center for Integrated Oncology Aachen, Bonn, Cologne and Düsseldorf ( CIO for short ) is the common tumor center of the Aachen University Hospital , the Bonn University Hospital , the Cologne University Hospital and the Düsseldorf University Hospital . It is funded by the German Cancer Aid Foundation as a top oncological center .

structure

The Cologne and Bonn clinics have been working together as CIO Cologne Bonn since 2007. In September 2018, the CIO Aachen Bonn Cologne Düsseldorf was formed through the connection of the Aachen and Düsseldorf clinics . All units and institutes of the 4 locations that deal with the research, diagnosis and treatment of tumor diseases work together under the umbrella of the CIO Aachen Bonn Cologne and Düsseldorf .

All patients with cancer who come to the Aachen, Bonn, Cologne or Düsseldorf university hospitals are treated in the CIO. Every year, over 100,000 patients are cared for in the more than 200 clinics and institutes involved in cancer treatment at the four CIO locations.

The interdisciplinary treatment at all four university clinics is organized centrally for the patients by the CIO. During the tumor consultation hours, specialists from various disciplines examine the patient together. In interdisciplinary case conferences, the tumor boards , the experts discuss diagnosis and therapy for each individual case. In the tumor outpatient clinics, guides (patient carers) take the patients into the therapy and look after them during the treatment. The entire treatment process in the respective university clinic is coordinated by the guides. Supportive services in the CIO include a. Nutritional advice, psycho-oncological and palliative medical care, speech therapy, social services, arranging self-help groups and oncological training therapy (OTT).

In so-called interdisciplinary oncological project groups (IOPs), specialists advise on the latest research results and translate them into binding treatment guidelines ( Standard Operating Procedures ) for the diagnosis and treatment of various malignant tumor diseases.

Research priorities

Scientific research in the CIO is shaped by internationally recognized study groups and institutes:

  • The Lung Cancer Group Cologne (LCGC) researches new personalized therapy strategies in the treatment of lung cancer. In collaboration with the Institute for Pathology at the University Hospital Cologne , the LCGC founded the Network for Genomic Medicine (NGM) . This has evolved into the nationwide Netwertk nNGM, which has been funded by the German Cancer Aid since April 2018. Every year, over 5,000 tissue samples of lung cancer are examined for molecular diagnostics via the network . That corresponds to around ten percent of lung cancers in Germany. The network is thus the largest molecular diagnostics platform in Europe. This accompanying scientific research has shown that lung cancer patients who receive personalized treatment can survive longer by up to 24 months.
  • The German Hodgkin Study Group has recruited around 20,000 patients for its studies since 1987 and, through the results of their studies, is involved in the progress of the treatment of Hodgkin lymphoma .
  • The German CLL study group is researching new treatments for chronic lymphocytic leukemia . The clinical study CLL11 of the German CLL Study Group in 2014 forms the basis for the approval of a new antibody therapy for CLL patients in Europe. Research has been funded by the German Cancer Aid Foundation since 1999 .
  • The Cologne Center for Familial Breast and Ovarian Cancer at the University Hospital of Cologne works together with international study groups and coordinates the German Consortium for Familial Breast and Ovarian Cancer , which has helped identify new risk factors for hereditary cancer in its research.

The CIO Aachen Bonn Cologne Düsseldorf is advised by a scientific advisory board, the Scientific Advisory Board (SAB). It meets once a year and consists of international scientists as well as representatives of patient aid and payers.

history

The CIO Cologne Bonn was founded in 2007.

In December 2011, the new building for the Center for Integrative Medicine was inaugurated on the campus of the Bonn University Hospital. The seat of the CIO is located there in Bonn.

In the summer of 2015, construction work began on a new building for the CIO at the Cologne site on the premises of the Cologne University Hospital. The foundation stone was laid on October 29, 2015 in the presence of State Secretary Thomas Grünewald . The state of North Rhine-Westphalia is investing 78 million euros in the new building. With over 13,500 square meters of usable space on seven floors, the cancer center is the largest new clinic on the grounds of the Cologne University Hospital since the 1970s.

Award

Since 2008, the CIO Cologne Bonn has been one of 13 university tumor centers in the Federal Republic of Germany, and has been recognized as a top oncological center by the German Cancer Aid . In April 2019, the German Cancer Aid also announced the funding of the CIO Aachen Bonn Cologne Düsseldorf. In the current funding period from 2019 to 2022, the award is linked to a funding amount of 6 million euros for the interdisciplinary care of cancer patients and translational oncological research.

The CIO locations in Cologne and Aachen have been certified as oncological centers by the German Cancer Society since 2013, Düsseldorf since 2014 and Bonn since 2015 .

management

Director of the CIO Cologne Bonn (2007-2018): Prof. Michael Hallek

Director of the CIO Aachen Bonn Cologne Düsseldorf (since 2018): Prof. Michael Hallek

cooperation

The CIO has been cooperating with the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Center ( UPMC ) since 2008 .

On World Cancer Day 2020, the CIO started future-oriented information work for the first time in cooperation with the Cancer Information Network and the German Cancer Aid at joint public events. Experts from the oncology center in the largest federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia will continue to advise citizens free of charge on topics such as cancer prevention , treatment progress and maintaining the quality of life with cancer.
