The tunnel Gnalp-web is provided with a length of 740 meters, the longest road tunnel in Principality Liechtenstein . The tunnel, opened in 1947, connects at an altitude of around 1260  m above sea level. M. the Rhine valley with the Samina valley and is therefore of great importance for the development of the Liechtenstein Alpine region (especially Malbun ). The maximum headroom is limited to 3.8 meters

description

The tunnel is located in the municipal area of Triesenberg and connects the districts of Gnalp (western tunnel portal at 1253  m above sea level ) and Steg (tunnel portal at 1270  m above sea level ). Since the tunnel does not have any curves, the tunnel exit can already be seen when entering the tunnel. Due to the width of the lane of around 4.5 meters, only cars are driven in oncoming traffic, while traffic is regulated by traffic lights when buses and trucks pass through .

history

As early as 1867, as part of the road construction from Vaduz via Triesenberg to Malbun, a 48 meter long road tunnel was built between Gnalp and Steg, which was the only passable connection into the Samina valley.

With the advent of tourism and car traffic, there was a demand for an alternative to this steep and narrow road connection. Accordingly, various attempts were made in the 1930s to build a new tunnel - also as a measure to combat unemployment. In 1939, the Liechtenstein Parliament finally decided to build a new tunnel, but its implementation was delayed due to the Second World War .

In 1945 the state parliament again approved the construction of a tunnel and granted a loan of 1.2 million francs for it. The first blast was carried out at the beginning of February 1946, with both tunnel portals being driven. The tunnel finally broke through on September 4, 1946 and a good year later - on December 4, 1947 - the tunnel was ceremoniously opened.

Between 1989 and 1994 the Gnalp – Steg tunnel was renovated for 6.8 million Swiss francs and a parallel service tunnel was built.

safety

A safety assessment of the tunnel, which was commissioned by the Liechtenstein government in 2013, came to the conclusion that "the required structural, technical and organizational measures had not been fully met" and the "overall safety level was judged to be insufficient" must. For this reason, various measures are planned for the next few years, including the renewal of the tunnel lighting, the creation of SOS niches every 150 meters, the improvement of the extinguishing water supply and the development of operational concepts and plans. Work for CHF 1.4 million was planned for 2019.
