Quarry pond |
The Tunxdorfer Waldsee is a quarry pond in Tunxdorf near Papenburg , Emsland district , Lower Saxony . It is used as a swimming and recreational lake.
description
The Tunxdorfer Waldsee was created as a quarry pond through the construction of a modern dike to protect against the Ems. In response to the great storm surge in 1962, the decision was made to build a larger and more modern dike in the Papenburg region .
Originally, the highest point (16 m. Above sea level) of the so-called "Tunxdorf Mountains" was at the site of today's forest lake. The sand in the "Tunxdorfer Mountains" was needed to build and expand this Ems dike.
The bathing water quality is monitored according to EU guidelines. Due to the construction of the Autobahn 31, however, more quarry ponds were created in the region, so that today there are more bathing facilities in the vicinity and there are significantly fewer visitors to the Tunxdorf Forest Lake than in earlier times.
