Turbine, Inc. is an American development studio based in Westwood , Massachusetts . The company specializes in massively multiplayer online role-playing games .

history

The company was founded in 1994 as a startup by Johnny Monsarrat with fellow students in his mother's house. At that time, the company was still trading as Turbine Entertainment Software. After the company briefly moved into Providence offices , the company's headquarters were finally relocated to Westwood. The studio's first title was the MMORPG Asheron's Call . since 2005 the company has been trading as a turbine. On April 20, 2010, Turbine was acquired by the US media group Time Warner for $ 160 million and has been part of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment ever since .

Turbine is considered a pioneer of the free-to-play business model in North America. When Dungeons & Dragons Online, which was launched in 2006, began to lose more and more players, in 2009 the company was one of the first leading US manufacturers to switch from a subscription model to free access and micropayment . The change led to a significant increase in the number of players and sales.
