Nikolai Stepanowitsch Turchaninow

Nikolai Stepanovich Turchaninov ( Russian Николай Степанович Турчанинов , * probably May 1796 in Nikitowka at Biryuch ; † 26 December 1863 jul. / 7. January  1864 greg. In Kharkov ) one was Russian botanist and the discoverer of several genera and many species. Several species were named after him, including Connarus turczaninowii , Hydrocotyle turczaninowii , and Sisymbrium turczaninowii . Its botanical author abbreviation is “ Turcz. ".

Life

Nikolai Stepanowitsch Turchaninow was born into a large landowning family. Since childhood he has been interested in nature and created herbariums. On the initiative of the university professor Ilya Fyodorowitsch Timkowskis, he moved to Kharkov , where from 1811 he attended lectures on zoology and general botany at FA Delavigne. In 1814, at the age of 18, Turchaninov graduated from the course with the degree of candidate of science .

After graduating from university in 1814, he moved to Saint Petersburg , where he worked in the Ministry of Justice and then until 1828 in the Ministry of Finance. He was then transferred to Irkutsk , which allowed him to study the fauna of Lake Baikal . This is where his Catalogus plantarum in regionibus Baicalensibus et in Dauria sponte crescentium was created , a description of almost 1000 plants for which he received the Demidow Prize in 1857 .

In 1830 Turchaninov became a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences . This enabled him to do extensive botanical activities. Until 1835 he traveled around southeast Siberia and took in the fauna.

In 1837 he returned to the public service, in 1845 he retired and moved to Taganrog , where he opened a large herbarium.
