background

Turið [ ˈtuːrɪ ] was the first Faroese woman in history who is known about more than just her name. She was an influential woman during the Viking Age in the Faroe Islands . The first name Turið is still a common female name in the Faroe Islands today .

Turið was the daughter of Ragnhild Toralfsdóttir and Torkil Barfrost from Norway. Turið's surname Torkilsdóttir ( Torkils daughter ) serves to distinguish it from other bearers of the first name, in literature she is usually only called Turið (chief widow) . The year of her birth is not known, but the Faroese saga tells that Sigmundur Brestisson and Tóri Beinisson came to Ulfdal in Dovrefjell on their trip through Norway around 973 , where Turið's parents lived, and that she was "very young" at the time, and later had a relationship with Sigmundur started and was pregnant by him around 979. It can be assumed that she was about the same age as the then 18-year-old.

So while her daughter Tóra was born around this time, she probably didn't marry Sigmundur until 986, after he was in Norway for the third time. According to the Faroese saga, the wedding is said to have taken place on the farm of King Håkon Jarl near Trondheim and lasted seven days. In autumn the young family moved to the Faroe Islands, where Turið spent the rest of their lives.

Together with Sigmundur, she had four other children, the sons Tórálvur , Steingrímur , Brandur and Heri . They all lived on the farm in Skúvoy .
