description

Tower of work

The sculpture is 13.73 m high, weighs 36.5 t and the foundation is 1.2 m deep. It is considered the landmark of the city of Salzgitter . The sculpture testifies to the city's tense past and is reminiscent of forced labor, escape, displacement and dismantling, but also of the reconstruction and the founding of a new city and a new business location.

In 1985 the order to erect the monument was given, in 1992 the city of Salzgitter celebrated its 50th anniversary and in 1995 the monument was finally handed over after ten years of construction. The present monument was made of marble and bronze and the cost at that time was 1,130,000 DM .

The “tower of work” stands on four reliefs, the themes of which serve as the basis for the tower. The first relief deals with “work underground ”. The second relief is supposed to show the “ collection of workers”. The third relief shows " sabotage " and the fourth relief has " charity " on the subject.

The figure of the "sampler" or "pourer" forms the upper end of the monument .
