The Turner Contemporary is an account opened in April 2011, newly built Art Museum in Margate , Kent , England . His name refers to the English painter J. MW Turner , who went to school in Margate and regularly visited the city and the Thames estuary until the end of his life.

history

The museum was advertised in 2001 in an architectural competition. The first prize went to Snøhetta , a Norwegian architecture firm. Because of the enormous costs, the city of Margate decided not to carry out the design. Since 2006 a modified, reduced building has been planned by the English architect David Chipperfield . Construction began in 2008 and was completed in 2011 at a cost of £ 17.5 million . The construction costs were raised by local and regional funds as well as the European Union , the property was made available by the Thanet District Council . The English artist Tracey Emin opened the museum with her most extensive exhibition to date.
