Yinka Shonibare (2012)

Yinka Shonibare , CBE (born August 9, 1962 in London ) is a British - Nigerian artist who is best known for his work with Dutch Wax , printed, colorful cotton fabrics. Shonibare discovered by chance at Brixton Market in London that the Dutch Wax fabrics , which a professional costume designer uses to make Victorian clothing for him, were originally discovered by the Dutch.

life and work

Yinka Shonibare, who has held an MBE since 2005 , was born in London in 1962. His father, a Nigerian lawyer, moved the family to Lagos , Nigeria when he was three years old. Shonibare speaks English and his native language Yoruba .

Shonibare went back to Great Britain to later complete his school education with the advanced level .

At the age of eighteen he developed transverse myelitis and, as a long-term consequence, is paralyzed on one side.

From 1984 to 1989 he studied painting at the Byam Shaw School of Art , now Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, and from 1989 to 1991 at Goldsmiths, University of London , where he completed his studies with a Masters .

His son, the artist Kayode Shonibare-Lewis was born in 1990 while Shonibare was working for shape arts , an organization in London that makes art accessible to the disabled . He lives and works in the East End of London.

Shonibare was invited to Documenta 11 by Okwui Enwezor in 2002 . There he exhibited his work Gallantry and Criminal Conversation , which meant his international breakthrough for him. Shonibare is one of the Young British Artists and has chosen sculpture , photography , installation , painting and film as artistic means of expression .
