The Turnpike Bluff ( English for toll road cliff ) is a striking cliff in the East Antarctic Coatsland . It rises up to 1150 m in height about 8 km southwest of Mount Homard at the southwest end of the Shackleton Range .
It was first mapped in 1957 by participants in the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition (1955-1958) under the direction of British polar explorer Vivian Fuchs . The name was derived from the numerous crevasses of the Recovery Glacier , which at this point severely hindered the expedition vehicles on their way to the geographic South Pole.
