The Turold Cave ( Jeskyně na Turoldu ) in the Turold Mountain on the northern edge of Mikulov (German: Nikolsburg ) is the largest cave system formed in Jurassic limestone in the Czech Republic . The cave in the Pálava Biosphere Reserve is also an important wintering site for various bat species .

history

The earliest mentions of a cave in the 385 meter high Turold mountain come from the year 1669. However, this cave was destroyed between 1873 and 1934 by the quarry operated there. In 1951 the access to today's cave was discovered at an altitude of 304 meters above sea level and over the next few years corridors and chambers were discovered with a length of around 470 meters.

The Turold Cave was opened to the public for the first time between 1958 and 1967. After the death of the two explorers Závada and Holan, the Jeskyně na Turoldu was closed to tourism. In the following years the cave was damaged by various acts of vandalism (destruction of the electrical cables and staircases, graffiti, ...).

In 1974 a speleological group was formed in Mikulov that looked after the Turold Cave and finally made it accessible to tourism again in 2004 with the help of the town. The cave has been a nature reserve since 2002 .

From around 2,000 meters of the cave, around 300 meters have been made accessible to visitors. The path leads over many staircases down to a depth of around 37 meters to an underground lake.

No stalactites formed in Jeskyně na Turoldu, but decorations in numerous places reminiscent of corals (Turold decoration) and only known in three caves worldwide.

The approximately 300-meter-long freely accessible path to the actual cave entrance was designed as an educational trail with eight information boards labeled in Czech.
