Charles Richardson Jeffs (born January 20, 1893 in New York City (Brooklyn, USA), † October 24, 1959 in Bremen ) was an American rear admiral and military governor and state commissioner of the USA in Bremen.

biography

Jeffs became an officer candidate in the United States Navy in 1911 . He graduated from the military academy. During the First World War he served as a lieutenant in a destroyer flotilla near Ireland . Until 1922 he was active in the U-Bootwaffe . He then studied and received his master's degree in engineering from Columbia University in 1928 . He was then a marine engineer in the US Navy. From 1938 to 1942 he commanded a patrol flotilla of gunboats on the Yangtze River in the Republic of China . From 1942 to 1944 he taught at Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island . In 1944 he became the commander of a battleship and took part in some skirmishes (including the Battle of Leyte ) against Japan during World War II .

As a captain he was transferred to Bremen on August 10, 1945 and served as commander of the American naval base in Bremen (US Naval Advance Base Bremen). At the same time he was Deputy Commander of the US Navy Forces in Germany. He tried to restore the ports in Bremen and Bremerhaven as Port of Embarkation . The dismantling of the shipyards was also his area of ​​responsibility. On March 6, 1947 he became Deputy Director, on November 20, 1948 Director of the Military Government for Bremen and, after its dissolution, on September 21, 1949, State Commissioner for Bremen. His promotion to Rear Admiral took place in 1950 with his retirement from active naval service. He remained state commissioner until 1952. Jeffs was married three times. In 1953 he married Therese Bauer from Bremen and stayed in Bremen.
