Tutusch II.

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tutusch II. († late 1104 ) was the nominal ruler (malik) of Damascus from the Turkish-born dynasty of the Seljuks for a few weeks in 1104 .

Tutusch was a son of Malik Duqaq , who died on June 8, 1104 (12th Ramaḍān 497 AH) and made him his testamentary successor. Because Tutusch was underage at that time, Tughtigin was appointed for him as a tutor ( Atabeg ), who was to exercise governmental power for the period of underage. But only three months later the Atabeg had the brother of the deceased ruler, Bektasch , lead from Baalbek to Damascus and enthroned him on September 17th (24th Ḏū l-Ḥiǧǧa 947 AH) as the new ruler. Fearing for his life, Bektasch fled Damascus just a month later and Tutusch died shortly afterwards.

Atabeg Tughtigin established the sole rule of his dynasty in Damascus, which was to be inherited by the Zengids in 1154 and finally by the Ayyubids in 1174 .
